Naomi Haverland has spent more than a decade turning ordinary pavement into a stage for optical trickery. She began drawing long before she ever touched chalk, but it was in 2011 that she found her true medium, developing a signature blend of humor and hyper-realistic portraiture that quickly set her apart in the street-painting world. Naomi Haverland has been painting for as long as she can remember and has been doing chalk since 2011. She specializes in humorous and hyper-realistic portraits. Her anamorphic pieces, drawn to appear three-dimensional only from a specific vantage point, are widely regarded as some of the most technically demanding work in the genre. Her style is characterized by hyper-realistic portraits infused with humor, as well as striking 3D optical illusions, and the quality of her anamorphic works places her among the most talented artists in the field.

The anamorphic method itself relies on controlled distortion: the image is stretched across a horizontal surface so that it only resolves into a coherent three-dimensional scene when seen from one particular angle. Getting that geometry right, while still preserving the humor and likeness that define her portraits, has earned Haverland significant recognition, including seven awards from the Denver Chalk Art Festival in her home state of Colorado. She has won many recognitions and awards for her chalk art, including 7 awards at the Denver Chalk Art Festival. Her pieces have also been commissioned by major companies such as Harley-Davidson, Amazon, Microsoft, and Skittles, and she has traveled to festivals across the United States as well as abroad in Germany, Canada, and Mexico.

Haverland’s career has moved geographically alongside her artistic focus, from Denver to Seattle and eventually to Florida, where she now splits her time between street festivals and studio oil painting. Despite the technical complexity of her illusions, she has described her intent in fairly modest terms, aiming for pieces that read as playful and immediate rather than layered with symbolism. “My goal usually is to create something fun that will make people smile, not typically going for something with a lot of deep meaning or symbolism,” Haverland has said, noting that the optical illusion demands a straightforward, simple approach because it already asks people to find a very specific vantage point. That balance of accessible humor and rigorous technical control is what continues to define her work at festivals and corporate installations alike.
