Shanghai-based photographer Leslie Zhang has built a distinctive visual language that merges personal memory with cultural identity, transforming fashion photography into a poetic exploration of contemporary Chinese aesthetics. Born Zhang Jiacheng in 1992, the self-taught artist initially studied painting before transitioning to photography, drawing inspiration from Japanese photographers Shoji Ueda and Yoshihiko Ueda. His approach to image-making centers on recreating the ambiances and moods from his childhood memories of growing up in Yangzhou and Nanjing, filtering these recollections through bold primary colors reminiscent of post-Cultural Revolution China and elements as deceptively simple as stylistic flower arrangements and banal street typography. Working in both digital and analog formats, Zhang incorporates references to Mando- and Canto-pop music videos as well as Chinese iconography of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, creating compositions that feel simultaneously timeless and contemporary.

Zhang’s technical mastery manifests through saturated lighting, high-contrasted shots, and various camera lenses, particularly evident in his reinterpretations of Wong Kar-Wai’s cinematic aesthetics, where he employs similar color palettes to films like In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express. His meticulous compositional precision ensures that nothing is placed accidentally, with each element — from ink paintings with dark brush strokes to branches of delicate flowers and calligraphy characters — carefully positioned to create multilayered visual narratives. His strategic use of red, a color deeply embedded in Chinese cultural symbolism, serves as both accent and catalyst, drawing focus while evoking emotional responses tied to tradition, passion, and national identity. Zhang’s ability to oscillate between sultry portraiture and contemplative still life demonstrates his range, as he transforms ordinary objects into weighted symbols exploring themes of transience and connection. His work has garnered international recognition, including being named to the British Fashion Council’s “New Wave: Creatives” list in 2018 and inclusion in The Business of Fashion’s BoF 500 in 2019, establishing him as a leading figure of his generation in Chinese fashion photography.
