Rasmussen’s sculptures transform natural elements into uncanny figures

Danish artist Malene Hartmann Rasmussen creates ceramic sculptures that seem to emerge from an imagined world where folklore, nature, and memory intertwine. Her figures combine human features with leaves, shells, flowers, antlers, eggs, and other organic elements, resulting in strange personalities that feel both familiar and elusive. Richly textured surfaces and exaggerated forms give each work a distinct presence, as though these beings belong to a forgotten mythology waiting to be rediscovered.

Across series such as Trolls, Rasmussen assembles fragments of the natural world into expressive faces and hybrid creatures that resist easy interpretation. Some appear playful and humorous, while others carry an unsettling quality that lingers beneath their cartoonish charm. By balancing cuteness with ambiguity, the artist creates sculptures that shift between attraction and discomfort, encouraging closer examination of their unusual details and emotional complexity.

Drawing inspiration from European folklore, pagan traditions, and animist ideas, Rasmussen explores themes connected to imagination, loss, and transformation. Her works often feel like relics from an unfinished story, hinting at narratives that remain just out of reach. A selection of these remarkable ceramics is currently featured alongside paintings by James Mortimer in Brutes at James Freeman Gallery in London, where the sculptures’ enigmatic personalities continue to occupy the space between wonder and unease.
