Bjørn Okholm Skaarup turns animals into symbols of human culture and behavior

Bjørn Okholm Skaarup builds a sculptural universe in which animals become carriers of human ideas, behaviors and cultural symbols. His practice moves between the natural and the constructed, transforming familiar creatures through references to mythology, art history, literature, music and popular culture. The artist describes this relationship as a space between nature and culture, where animals become “culturalized” through allegory and their interaction with human-made objects. This approach gives his bronze sculptures an unusual combination of historical awareness, theatrical humor and narrative density.

Bronze is central to Skaarup’s practice, allowing him to construct elaborate compositions in which substantial forms can appear unexpectedly animated, balanced or physically unstable. His interest in the possibilities of the medium developed through his study of Renaissance sculpture in Florence, where he examined the work of artists including Donatello, Michelangelo and Giambologna while learning large-scale bronze casting. His modeling emphasizes intricate details, complex silhouettes and contrasts between weight and movement, revealing a sustained concern with how far traditional sculptural techniques can be pushed without losing their material presence.

The historical dimension of Skaarup’s work is equally important. His sculptures draw from classical mythology and Renaissance traditions while incorporating imagery associated with modern animation, entertainment and twentieth-century popular culture, creating unexpected connections across periods that are normally separated by centuries. Humor becomes a structural device within this process: anthropomorphic animals can embody ideas about authority, ambition, technology, social behavior and human vanity, turning the animal kingdom into a flexible language for examining civilization itself.

Skaarup’s background as a historian, illustrator and sculptor further strengthens this dialogue between research and visual invention. Before dedicating himself more fully to sculpture, he worked at the Danish National Museum, and he has also written and illustrated books dealing with history, archaeology and anatomy. His practice consequently operates across several forms of knowledge, combining careful observation, technical craftsmanship and an expansive archive of cultural references. The result is a contemporary bestiary in which polished bronze, exaggerated anatomy and theatrical gestures transform traditional sculptural language into something playful, intellectually layered and distinctly contemporary.
