Melissa Sue Stanley is an illustrator and sculptor from northern Illinois whose work centers on the Woolbeasts, a growing population of soft-bodied forest creatures that anchor her ongoing narrative project Grisella’s Woolbeast Wayguide. What began as crocheted figures made from repurposed wool yarn around 2005 evolved over the years into hand-sewn wool felt pieces, before Stanley shifted to sculpting in polymer clay, primarily CosClay, starting in 2019. Each figure is built one at a time with no molds or resin castings involved, so no two Woolbeasts are ever identical, and many still carry a trace of their fiber-based origins in the form of hand-knitted scarves or tiny stitched satchels.
What sets the work apart is the density of narrative packed into each piece. These are not generic fantasy figurines; they’re characters pulled from a specific, sprawling mythology Stanley has been writing for over a decade, complete with regional geography, recurring figures like the guide Grisella and her assistant Scout, and a folkloric internal logic about roots that talk and plants that bite. That worldbuilding shows up in the sculptural details: miniature hand-bound books, woven backpacks, and props scaled to match each creature’s implied trade or role within the forest. The effect is closer to character design for an unwritten storybook than to conventional soft-sculpture craft, and it’s part of why the pieces read as narrative objects first and collectibles second.
Stanley’s practice spans illustration and sculpture in tandem, with watercolor work exploring the same wooded, midwestern-inspired landscapes that ground the Woolbeast mythology. She has shown sculptural and illustrated pieces in gallery exhibitions across the United States and abroad for over a decade, and continues to build out the Wayguide alongside a Patreon-supported community that follows the process behind each new piece. A companion narrative, centered on dragons, is slated to begin after the current forest-focused chapter concludes.
